8 great gift ideas this autumn

15 August 2026

Why autumn is a good time to refresh your list

Autumn brings a change in pace and atmosphere. Evenings get earlier. Cooking habits shift. The urge to be comfortable indoors increases. People start thinking about October birthdays, bonfire nights, and the run-up to Christmas.

If you're updating your Giftlet list, here are eight categories worth considering for the autumn and winter months ahead.

1. Quality knitwear

A really good jumper, cardigan, or merino wool base layer. This is the kind of thing people wear constantly through autumn and winter but often don't treat themselves to. Specify the brand, size, colour, and fit carefully โ€” knitwear is personal and sizing varies widely.

If you're giving: ask or check the list for specifics. A beautiful jumper in the wrong size is a disappointing gift. A beautiful jumper in the right one is worn for years.

2. A cosy throw

A quality wool or cashmere blanket for the sofa. These vary enormously in price โ€” from reasonable lambswool to aspirational cashmere โ€” but even the mid-range options are noticeably nicer than the average blanket. A good throw gets used daily through the cold months.

3. Candles and home fragrance

This is the season for them. Richer, warmer scents: amber, oud, leather, woodsmoke, clove and orange. The light changes in autumn and so do the scents that work in a home. Include the exact brand and scent if you're adding this to a list.

4. A casserole dish, slow cooker, or kitchen upgrade

Autumn cooking is different from summer cooking. Stews, braises, soups, roasts. A proper cast iron casserole dish โ€” the kind that goes from hob to oven to table โ€” is the kind of kitchen piece that people covet but struggle to justify for themselves. Specify size and brand if you have a preference.

5. A board game or card game

Long evenings, gatherings, the social season starting to open up โ€” autumn is good for games. A well-chosen board game or card game is a gift the whole household benefits from. Know the recipient's taste: the person who loves strategy games wants something different from the person who wants something quick and funny for family gatherings.

6. Wellies or outdoor footwear

Autumn is when you find out whether last year's boots still hold up. A pair of quality wellies, walking boots, or waterproof ankle boots is a practical-but-appreciated gift. These require knowing the size and, often, the brand they prefer.

7. A subscription or membership for the darker months

A streaming service they don't have. A museum membership for winter visits. A magazine subscription for a subject they love. The dark months are long โ€” something that provides regular entertainment or inspiration through them is a gift that keeps giving.

8. A hamper or curated food box

Autumn food is celebratory: cheese, cured meats, pickles, jams, crackers, good oils, chocolate. A well-assembled hamper โ€” from a good deli or specialist producer โ€” is appropriate for an enormous range of relationships and occasions, from near-strangers to close family.

The difference between a generic hamper and a thoughtful one is specificity. Choose things you know they like, or from producers in a region they love, or themed around a food interest they have.

Updating your Giftlet list

If any of these resonate, add them now โ€” the specific item, with a link and any notes about size or colour. September and October are when people start thinking about autumn birthdays and the approach to Christmas. A current list means they have something to go on.
